The Three of Chalices! What a pretty card!
The three of cups is a card of joy, festivity, toasting, all those good things. Alliances, friendships, new liaisons. It was clear that this could not be a card with just Stephanie– how lonely! So… we tracked down a couple of willing victims generous friends.
Katrina, on the left, came complete with her very own lovely green party frock, and Stacy did a very impressive Glinda impression in an enormous pink number, complete with glittered bodice. The colors worked out fantastically, and led to both Stephanie and I referring to the three as “the cotton candy card”.
One of the things with the cups that very quickly became apparent was that we needed sturdy props- with the blades, this was not so much of a concern; the worry there was more about not dropping them on my foot, or Stephanie’s limbs. The wands were likewise not-at-all-fragile, though in shooting the four of wands, I think Stephanie did get beaned at least once (it was a windy day). But the cups… this was going to be a little more difficult.
For the Ace, we used Stephanie’s silver chalice and a large metal bowl, which were fine to have on tile and cement and in water without fear of glass breaking. For the two, I already had two melamine goblets that I like to take camping, and those worked out great for the “lets not have broken glass and bare feet in a river” issue. For the three, I not only wanted durability, I wanted them to match, so, I found these three blue melamine goblets at Target. I think they worked out just great, and you’ll actually see them recur (with the brown ones from the two) throughout the series.
We shot in Codornices Park and the Berkeley Rose Garden, and entertained some kids playing frisbee. There was also an epic ride down the slide in ball gowns. I’m really quite pleased with how they turned out, over all, and many, many thanks go to Katrina and Stacy for being such lovely assistants!
Stephanie’s take on the three is here, and the full Flickr collection is here.
